CITY OF GILROY

LAND USE ALTERNATIVES WORKSHOP (LEGO BRICKS)

In June 2014 the City of Gilroy held the third community workshop on the New General Plan. The purpose of the workshop was to consider future growth and land uses for Gilroy. Community members participated in a workshop exercise in which they worked in small groups to develop land use maps using Lego bricks. The maps identified ten focus areas considered to have potential for future growth by 2040. Residents used the Lego bricks to represent their preferred plan for how the city should grow in the future. Eight colors of Lego bricks were provided, representing all of the major land use categories. Participants could stack bricks of different colors to represent mixed-use development and could stack bricks of the same color to represent higher-intensity development.
